BISMUTH SUBGALLATE 

Bismuth subgallate is a yellow substance that presents as an unscented powder. When exposed to sunlight, it becomes discolored. This drug is a heavy metal salt of gallic acid that is insoluble and ineffectively absorbed. It acts to protect the gastric mucosa and has potent astringent, antimicrobial and hemostatic effects. Bismuth subgallate is available as an over-the-counter antiperspirant where it is usually utilized as a major component.

Bismuth subgallate is used in the following:

  • Relief of pain and itching associated with internal and external hemorrhoids (piles)
  • Relief of itching and irritation around the back passage
  • Other related conditions

Do not give Bismuth subgallate to people with allergic to any of the ingredients.

Bismuth subgallate may have the following side effects:

  • Darkening of the tongue
  • Stools

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

 

Interactions

Bismuth subgallate may interact with the following medicines:

  • Aspirin
  • Clopidogrel
  • Diclofenac
  • Ibuprofen
  • Naproxen
  • Dalteparin
  • Enoxaparin
  • Heparin
  • Warfarin

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, seek medical help immediately.
