BALANITIS

BALANITIS

Balanitis is a condition characterized by the swelling of the foreskin or head of the penis. It affects 1 out of 20 males. And while it can occur in both circumcised and uncircumcised men, this occurs more often in those who are uncircumcised. It is typically caused by infection due to poor hygiene. However, over-cleansing may also contribute to skin irritation that may lead to Balanitis.

The infection occurs when bacteria or yeast have grown on the foreskin of the penis due to trapped moisture. Scented soaps and bar soaps that dry the skin and failure in thoroughly rinsing them off could also cause irritation.

Chronic skin conditions can also be an underlying cause for a patient to have Balanitis. Moreover, other health conditions that can cause Balanitis include Reactive Arthritis, Diabetes, and sexually transmitted infections such as Syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Trichomonas. Additionally, it can be caused by some types of skin cancer, but cases like this are very rare.

Although this condition may not be serious, the swelling can be painful and cause discomfort.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of Balanitis include:

  • Swelling and redness of the foreskin
  • Tightened foreskin
  • Itchiness
  • Discharge
  • Pain in the genital area
  • Painful skin on the penis
  • Painful urination due to increased pressure in the urethra

DIAGNOSIS

Since most of the symptoms of Balanitis are visible, the doctor can make a diagnosis through physical examination alone. If the patient has a discharge, a sample of that discharge may also be taken through a cotton swab or urine sample. To determine the cause of the condition, this sample can be sent to the laboratory for inspection for bacterial or fungal cells.

However, if the patient has a chronic skin condition that may have been the cause of Balanitis, the doctor may require a biopsy by collecting a small tissue from the penis. Local anesthesia will be administered before performing a biopsy.

TREATMENT

The first step for treatment is to stop using products that can irritate the penis, such as scented soaps, lotions, or powders. It is also advised to use warm water when cleansing.

Medications such as an anti-itch cream, antibiotic, antifungal drugs, and other medicated creams to help reduce and stop inflammation, swelling, and itching are prescribed.
