AMIODARONE HCL

Amiodarone HCL is a medicine that is used to treat various kinds of heart rhythm disorders such as ventricular fibrillation or tachycardia. It is used to reestablish heart rhythm regularity and maintain a normal heart rate. Amiodarone is known as an anti-arrhythmic medication. It works by blocking abnormal signals in the heart that can cause an irregular heart rhythm.

Amiodarone HCL is used in the following:

  • Prevention of recurrence of life-threatening ventricular tachycardia
  • Treatment of supraventricular tachycardia
  • Slowing or reduction in atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter
  • Serious arrhythmia
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation of shock-resistant ventricular fibrillation in patients experiencing cardiac arrest

Do not give Amiodarone HCL to people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to iodine or amiodarone
  • Sinus bradycardia
  • Sino-atrial heart block
  • Sinus node disease
  • High-degree atrio-ventricular conduction disorders in patients without pacemakers
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Concomitant use witht orsadogenic medicinal products, telaprevir, cobicistat
  • Pregnancy (second and third trimester)
  • Lactation
  • Children less than 3 years of age

Amiodarone HCL may have the following side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Lilac or slate-grey colored skin pigmentation
  • Diffuse interstitial or alveolar pneumonitis
  • Difficulty of breathing or dry cough
  • Sleep disorders
  • Peripheral sensori motor or mixed neuropathy
  • Erythema or redness
  • Edema or swelling
  • Necrosis
  • Transient fall in blood pressure

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Severe bradycardia
  • Hypokalemia or low blood potassium
  • Hypotension or low blood pressure
  • Heart failure or severe respiratory failure
  • Gasping syndrome in premature and full-term newborns

Interactions

Amiodarone HCL may interact with the following medicines:

  • Quinidine
  • Hydroquinidine
  • Disopyramide
  • Bisoprolol
  • Carvedilol
  • Metoprolol
  • Nebivolol

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Faster, slower or more irregular heartbeat
  • Severe dizziness
  • Fainting
