AMIKACIN SULFATE

Amikacin sulfate is a medicine that is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It is active against a wide range of microorganisms such as Gram-negative bacteria. It acts to inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria by binding to the 50s ribosomal subunit. This medicine is available as an injection.

Uses

Amikacin sulfate is used in the following conditions:

  • Severe Gram -negative bacterial infections
  • Uncomplicated UTI

Warning

Do not give Amikacin sulfate to people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to amikacin and other aminoglycosides
  • Myasthenia gravis

Side Effects

Amikacin sulfate may have the following side effects:

  • Neurotoxicity manifested as vestibular and permanent bilateral auditory ototoxicity
  • Skin rash
  • Drug fever
  • Headache
  • Paresthesia
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Eosinophilia
  • Arthralgia
  • Anaemia
  • Nephrotoxicity
  • Neuromuscular blockade and respiratoryparalysis
  • Clostridium difficile-associated colitis

Precautions

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Patient with pre-existing hearing or vestibular damage
  • Muscular disorder such as parkinsonism
  • Renal impairment
  • Premature and neonatal infants
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

  • Nephrotoxicity
  • Ototoxicity
  • Neuromuscular blockade and respiratoryarrest
