ACIPIMOX

Acipimox belongs to a group of drug called nicotinic acid that regulates lipid level in the blood. It works by inhibiting the release of fatty acids from fat tissues. It is often used when diet or other medications didn’t work out in reducing the levels of the certain fats in blood called triglycerides.

This medicine is used to treat lipid disorder of patients with type IIa, IIb and IV Hyperlipidaemia. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Avoid drinking alcohol during treatment with acipimox.

Common side effects of this drug include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Rashes
  • Urticaria
  • Itching
  • Malaise
  • Flushing
  • Heart Burn
  • Epigastric Pain
  • Dry Eye

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

More serious side effects may include:

  • Severe Allergic Reaction (Swelling, Hives, Rashes, Difficulty in Breathing)
  • Inflammation of Muscle Tissue causing Pain in the Muscles and Joint

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these serious side effects.

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you have certain medical conditions such as:
    • Liver, Heart or Kidney Problems
    • Ulcer Affecting the Stomach or Gut
  • If you are taking any herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Alcohol
  • Statins (Simvastatin)
  • Fibrates (Clofibrate)
  • Colestyramine

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
