ABERCROMBIE SYNDROME

ABERCROMBIE SYNDROME

Abercrombie syndrome is a condition that happens when the amyloid spreads the tissue’s cells or fibers, which can result in degeneration. An amyloid degeneration is common, and it can be found in the liver, spleen, and kidneys, affecting some body tissues.

Furthermore, when the tissue degenerates simultaneously, there is a possibility that the affected organs will lose their proper functions. Also, the affected organs may appear to become hard, enlarged, and smooth.

SYMPTOMS

The appearance of the tissue turns into moderate or translucent yellow or white like a bacon rind. The cortex of the tissue will be bloodless, as well. Moreover, as the artery’s blood vessels or muscles become affected, the tendency is that they will become thick and clear. Also, the disease can affect any organ or tissue of the body.

The symptoms of the disease may differ depending on the affected organ or tissue of the body; however, the common symptoms felt by the patients are the following:

Those who have degeneration in other organs may experience comparable symptoms or even symptoms that are more particular to the function of the organ.

DIAGNOSIS

Abercrombie syndrome may be detected through urine and blood tests. These tests can determine the existence of an amyloid protein. Also, a bone marrow biopsy is needed to properly diagnose the presence of amyloidosis.

The experts may request another set of laboratory tests for detailed information. The tests are conducted to determine the following:

  • Types of amyloid protein
  • Affected organs
  • Progress of the disease

TREATMENT

The main purpose of the treatment is to lessen or delay the growth of the amyloid protein in the body. It can also remove the stocked amyloid, lessen the underlying conditions, and alleviate the symptoms of the condition brought by kidney and heart damage.

You need to consult different experts like rheumatology, hematology, cardiology, nephrology, and neurology. These doctors will collaborate to assess your condition and the disease’s impact on your body.

Moreover, the following are drugs you can use to treat your condition:

  • Colebenemid
  • Prednisone
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs

In some cases, surgery is one of the options to treat Abercrombie Syndrome. It can manage or control nerve pressure.
