5 Yummy Summer Snacks To Keep You Cool and Refreshed

 

Summer is one hot dry season from March till May. As it is a long summer break for the kids, you might be wondering how to beat the heat.

These five easy DIY summer snacks will satisfy your cravings and keep you cool and refreshed! They are also easy to prepare—even by the kids!

1. Ice Candy

Ice candy is one of the common summer treats in the Philippines to beat the heat. It is also easy to prepare; you will need fruit juice, milk or some fruit bits that you have to place in small and slender plastic bags.

You can make different kinds of ice candy depending on your available ingredients. You can use melon for your ice candy as it is readily available during the summer season.

Easy Melon Ice Candy

Ingredients

  • 1 standard casserole of water, approximately 6litres
  • 1 big can of condensed milk
  • 2 pieces of medium-sized melon fruit
  • 1 kilo brown sugar
  • 50+ pcs ofice candy cellophane bag or “ice candy wrapper”

In a bowl, mix condensed milk, water and brown sugar. Stir and mix until texture is smooth. Place in ice candy bags using a funnel. Place in the refrigerator until firm.

2. Mango Float

Mango float is a delicious summer treat made of alternating layers of Graham cracker and milk-cream. Aside from the fact that it’s easy to prepare, it is also a tasty dessert that you can serve after meals in any occasion.

Ingredients:

  • 1 box of Graham crackers
  • 1 box of Graham crumbs (optional)
  • 2 small cans all-purpose cream
  • 1 can of condensed milk
  • 1 can of evaporated milk
  • 6 ripe mangoes, sliced

Mix all-purpose cream, condensed milk and evaporated milk in a bowl. Set aside.

Get a square pan. Line the bottom of the pan with 1 layer of Graham crackers. Next, pour the mixture of cream and milk into the layer. Line again with another layer of Graham crackers and pour cream and milk mixture again on the top. If desired, create another layer of crackers and cream-milk mixture. Top with sliced mangoes. You can add Graham crumbs on top if you want.

3. Frozen Fruit Salad

Ingredients:

  • 24 pcsBroas
  • 1 pc green apple (diced with peel)
  • 10 pc grapes (halved)
  • 1 can (300 ml) condensed milk (for fruit mixture)
  • 1 pack (250 ml) all-purpose cream (for fruit mixture)
  • 1 cup mayonnaise (for fruit mixture)
  • ¼ tsp iodized fine salt (for fruit mixture)
  • 1 can (432 grams) fruit cocktail mix (drained, reserve syrup)

In a bowl, combine green apple, grapes and fruit cocktail mix. Add salt. Add condensed milk, all-purpose cream and mayonnaise. Mix thoroughly. Place in the refrigerator. Serve chilled.

4. DIY Chocolate Shake

In just two simple steps, you can already enjoy this DIY Chocolate Shake while you beat the summer heat at home!

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup milk
  • ¼ cup chocolate-flavored syrup
  • 3 scoops (1/2 cup each) vanilla ice cream

Mix milk and syrup in a shaker bottle. Shake the bottlefor about 30 seconds.

Add ice cream and shake again for 30 seconds. Serve immediately!

5. Sago’t Gulaman

Sago`t Gulaman is a sweet Filipino beverage made of tapioca pearls and jelly.

Ingredients

  • 1 pouch gelatin powder (unflavored)
  • 1 1/4 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of tapioca pearls – uncooked
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 4 cups water
  • ice cubes

Instructions

Make the gulaman jelly. Dissolve one pouch of gelatin powder in 1 1/4 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Bring to a boil then remove from heat. Chill then cut into small squares or diagonal shapes.

Cook the tapioca pearls by placing them in a half liter of boiling water and cook for 10 minutes. Separate the pearls from the water using a strainer. Wash the tapioca pearls with water and cook again until they become transluscent.

Cook the syrup. Add 1 cup of brown sugar to 1 cup of water and boil. Stir continuously to mix. Cool down and set aside.

Fill a pitcher with 4 cups of cold water and stir in the syrup. Add the gulaman and tapioca pearls. Place some ice cubes and serve cold.
