5 Helpful Sleep Tips for Drivers and Passengers

The month of May was the Road Safety Month and it aimed to promote road safety among Filipinos. It also highlighted the practice of safe driving, as well as the dangers and events one can encounter on the road.

Long car drives or long road trips are exciting yet exhausting for both the driver and the passenger. Whether you are on the road to seek adventure or as a part of your job, if you are too tired or if it gets too late in the night, you will need to stop driving and get some rest. If you don’t have enough money to spend the night in a hotel, then your final option would be to sleep in your car. To get through the night, here are some sleep tips for drivers and passengers.

Prepare For It

Prepare for the night by gathering some things that can make you have a comfortable night’s sleep. Take the weather conditions into consideration. Think of the supplies that you will need, such as a flashlight, water, toiletries, pillows, blankets, towels, and others. When the temperature is cold, a blanket, a beanie for your head, an extra layer of clothing, and a sleeping bag will do. When the temperature is warm, you can let air in by opening the windows slightly and covering the gap with a thin cloth so that you will not be bitten by mosquitoes. Remember to always lock your car door so that you will be safe.

Choose the Perfect Spot

Choosing the perfect spot will keep you safe from any danger. To choose a spot where you can sleep at night, find a place where you will not get ticketed or will not be judged suspicious by the people in that area. Try 24-hour stores, residential areas that allow street parking, churches or other sanctuary-like institutions, as well as public overnight parking. Also, it is better to choose a place with a bathroom so that you can use it any time you need it.

Getting Comfortable

Sleeping in a car may not be as comfortable as sleeping in a real bed, but you can at least try to have a little comfort. Before sleeping in, make sure you visit the bathroom. Adjust your seats so you can have a lot of space for extra movements. Wear comfortable yet decent clothes so at any time someone will come knocking at your window, you will still look presentable.

Present Well

The community where you are parked and where you have planned to stay the night in will sometimes react to your presence. How you look and how your act will help determine how they will treat you. The way you look matters, so be clean and respectable-looking. Also, try to be friendly:  be polite or say hello to the locals to reassure them that you are harmless.

Have a Story

If somehow you get confronted by authorities, have a story ready. Talk about why you are there. You can tell them that you are on your way to a place and that you been driving for long hours so you just want to get some rest because you don’t want to fall asleep at the wheel.

We hope this article can help you on your trip!  Always be prepared and keep safe while driving!
