MAGNESIUM OXIDE

Magnesium oxide is a drug that belongs to a class of drugs known as antacids. It is usually available as a tablet to be taken by mouth. It is a magnesium salt.

Magnesium oxide is used as antacid for hyperacidity, for bowel preparation and as a nutritional supplement.

Magnesium oxide should not be used in people with kidney failure.

Magnesium oxide may have the following side effects:

  • Cramping
  • Diarrhoea
  • Rashes
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Vomiting
  • Upset stomach
  • Hypermagnesaemia
  • Paralytic ileus

Precautions

Take extra caution in people with the following disorders:

  • Renal impairment
  • Bowel obstruction

 

Interactions

Magnesium oxide may interact with the following medicines:

  • Tetracyclines
  • Bisphosphonates

Symptoms of overdose may include the following:

  • Slow heartbeat
  • Severe drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of consciousness
