MAGNESIUM LACTATE

Magnesium lactate is a food supplement that contains magnesium, an important element in various enzymatic reactions of the body. Magnesium acts as a cofactor in the synthesis of proteins and in the metabolism of carbohydrates. About 8.33 g of Magnesium Lactate (anhydrous) contains 1 gram of magnesium and a gram of Magnesium Lactate (anhydrous) contains around 4.9 mmol of magnesium.

Magnesium lactate serves as a dietary supplement for adults and pregnant women who have low magnesium levels in the blood.

Avoid using magnesium lactate if you are allergic to it. This supplement should not be given in people with the following medical conditions:

  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease
  • Allergy to animals, food dyes, or other medicines
  • Taking a blood thinner such as warfarin
  • Taking an antibiotic

Magnesium lactate may give rise to the following side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal irritation
  • Watery diarrhoea

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following conditions:

  • Kidney disease
  • Myasthenia gravis

This medicine should be taken with food to reduce the risk of diarrhea.

 

Interactions

Magnesium lactate may interact with the following medicines:

  • Bisphosphonates
  • Quinolone antibiotics
  • Tetracycline derivatives
  • Eltrombopag
  • Calcitriol
  • Mycophenolate
  • Trientine

Hypermagnesaemia can occur with too much intake of magnesium lactate. Symptoms include the following:

  • Respiratory depression
  • Loss of deep tendon reflexes due to neuromuscular blockade
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Flushing
  • Hypotension
  • Drowsiness
  • Bradycardia
  • Muscle weakness

If you think that you may have taken magnesium lactate more than the recommended dose, seek medical help immediately.
