LORATADINE-PSEUDOEPHEDRINE

Loratadine is an antihistamine that helps relieve symptoms such as watery eyes; itchy eyes, nose, throat; runny nose; and sneezing. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that relieves nasal congestion by shrinking the blood vessels in the nasal passages.

This combination medication is used to relieve symptoms such as watery eyes; itching eyes, nose, throat; runny nose and sneezing that commonly caused by seasonal allergies. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Do not use this drug for children under 12 years unless specifically prescribed by doctor.

Older adults and children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dizziness, drowsiness, mental or mood changes, constipation, fast heartbeat, trouble urinating, or blood pressure changes.

Common side effects may include:

  • Dry mouth
  • mild stomach upset
  • trouble sleeping
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • nervousness
  • loss of appetite
  • thirst

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Your doctor may have prescribed this medication because he or she judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Serious side effects may include:

  • Fast or Irregular Heartbeat
  • Uncontrolled Shaking or Tremor
  • Seizures
  • Mental or Mood Changes (such as Confusion)
  • Difficulty Urinating
  • Severe Allergic Reaction

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it; or to Desloratadine; or if you have any other allergies.
  • Your medical condition, especially of:
    • Glaucoma (Narrow Angle Type)
    • Severe Difficulty Urinating (Urinary Retention)
    • Severe High Blood Pressure
    • Severe Heart or Blood Vessel Disease (Coronary Artery Disease)
    • Liver Disease
    • Experienced Serious Side Effects with Decongestants (Irregular Heart Rhythm)
  • You medical history, especially of:
    • Kidney Disease
    • Problems Urinating (e.g., Enlarged Prostate)
    • High Blood Pressure
    • Diabetes
    • Heart Problems (e.g., Ischemic Heart Disease)
    • Thyroid Problems (Hyperthyroidism)
    • Glaucoma (Open Angle Type)
  • If you have alcoholic dependence.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • MAO Inhibitors such as Isocarboxazid, Linezolid, Methylene Blue, Moclobemide, Phenelzine, Procarbazine, Rasagiline, Selegiline, Tranylcypromine
  • Adrenalin-Like Drugs (e.g., Ephedrine, Methylphenidate)
  • Certain High Blood Pressure Drugs (e.g., Guanethidine, Methyldopa, Reserpine)
  • Beta-Blockers such as Propranolol
  • Herbal Products Containing Ephedra
  • Other Products that Contain the Same Ingredient of this Drug
  • Products that have Desloratadine

This medication may interfere with certain laboratory tests including allergy skin testing. Make sure laboratory personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug to avoid false results.

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Irregular or Unusually Slow or Fast Heartbeat
  • Unusual Nervousness or Excitement
  • Seizures
