EMETINE

Emetine belongs to Amebicides pharmacological group and used as both an anti-protozoal and to induce vomiting. It works by acting principally in the bowel wall and in the liver. In poison related emergencies , it may cause vomiting to withdraw poison.

This medication is used to treat several conditions like Amoebic dysentry, Amoebic granulomata, Amoebic skin lesion and Hepatic amoebiasis.

Emetine should not be used in patients with cardiac, renal or neuromuscular diseases. Close supervision and ECG monitoring is recommended during treatment. Avoid chronic use as drug accumulation may lead to potentially fatal toxicity.

Common side effects of this drug include:

  • Muscle ache
  • Tenderness
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Dizziness and Headache

Rare side effects are:

  • Mild Sensory Disturbances
  • Eczematous
  • Urticarial and Purpuric Skin Lesions

Serious side effects may include:

  • Severe Acute Degenerative Myocarditis

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are to undergo any surgical procedure.
  • If you are taking herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  • If you have certain medical conditions such as cardiac, renal or neuromuscular disease.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
